After my sweetie went up to the NICU with Phoebe I had two lovely visitors waiting for me. Joy and Joanna had been in the waiting room with Mely during delivery and came in to see me. It was so great to see them and so glad that they were there supporting me. Congratulations and tears all around!
After probably 20 minutes my sweetie came back down with all of Phoebe's stats and her foot prints.
7 lbs. 7 oz. 21 inches long and 31cm head circumference!
I of course drilled him on all that was happening up there, and ever the rock in my life he calmly described everything the nurses were doing with Phoebe. He had taken a bunch of pictures for me. He went back up to be with her while I waited down in the delivery room.
Everyone else but Ashley left the room. Dr. Hancock was off delivering two other babies- one was delivered three minutes after Phoebe and one about ten minutes after! I asked the nurse what the next step was and she said to deliver the placenta. She could see it but wanted to wait for the doctor to get back to get it, unless I wanted to push it out now. WELL YEAH!! Whatever it took to make this go faster. So after an easy push I heard a “PLOP”. She examined it to make sure it was all intact. If there is still some left in me there is cause for concern because of infection.
Finally the Dr. came back in, examined the placenta himself -describing to me what he was looking at. He then stitched me up while singing Broadway tunes – this was quite strange and got on my mom and Ashley's nerves. I just wanted him to hurry so I said nothing. Mom was on my left and Ash on my right. About halfway through Ashley got a bit queasy and had to sit down for a spell. She had some juice that the nurse gave her and eventually got back up next to my bed- still white as a sheet. The stitching didn't hurt at all, just a minor tugging feel- the anticipation of pain was the worst part and it was hard not to wince. My mom was such a big encouragement at this point!! She held my hand and reassured me it would be over soon.
After that the nurses came in and helped me to the restroom. Since I had an epidural, my legs were unsteady so when I got off the bed I had to lock my knees so I wouldn't fall over. It wasn't as bad as they seemed to anticipate- I felt like I could have almost done it myself, but they supported me the whole time which was nice. I got back to bed and had to have one more check over before I could go upstairs to see Pheebs. I couldn't wait!! They double checked everything and helped me in the wheelchair. Mom and Ashley said they would gather up all of our stuff and meet us in our recovery room. The nurses wheeled me up to the NICU at a snail's pace. I wanted to shove them off the wheelchair and take charge myself! "Move outta the way, I'm comin' through!!!" but I sat sedately and tried to act impatient even though every ounce of me wanted to tear through the halls to get to my daughter!
We finally arrived in her room and as the nurses were putting on the breaks and leaning down to help me out I lunged out of the chair and raced over to Pheebs' side-jumping over cords and wires to get to her. The nurses were quite surprised I didn't need any help and laughed as I saw my daughter for the second time. There were so many cords and machines around her! I asked if I could hold her and they said I could but that I'd have to sit down (due to my lack of physical strength). She was sooo tiny! I couldn't stop looking at her. I was so proud of her and of my sweetie!! He had been with her the whole time of course, just keeping his hand on her head- which she loved and still does! It is so sweet to see him with her.
Joy and mom were able to come up and see her too. They were in love immediately! =)
I wanted to nurse her right away- but since I hadn't eaten for almost 24 hours and had gone through delivery the nurses told me to go down to my room, order food, eat, and then come right back up. I needed to have nourishment in me to keep up my strength. I know this was what was best for me but I certainly didn't want to leave.
When we finally did go down to our room I ordered some very yummy food and relaxed a bit while I saw family a bit more before going to be with our daughter again.
